The Trustworthy AI Initiative at the University of Skövde

This initiative aims to strengthen the digital sovereignty of citizens and assist organisations in implementing advanced AI applications that conform to ethical guidelines. The initiative is open to all interested researchers and stakeholders at the University of Skövde, who are developing, using and/or advising the implementation of AI applications.

Why relevant?

AI applications, in particular those trained with personal data, can have a significant impact on the self-determination, well-being, and sovereignty of citizens by being incorporated in decision making processes such as granting benefits, providing healthcare, planning infrastructure, and creating new digital services.

The Trustworthy AI Initiative at the University of Skövde focuses on the ethical aspects of developing and deploying such AI applications. We will assist organisations that plan to develop or deploy AI applications to consider citizens’ rights.

Specifically, supporting the integration of these rights into the design, development, and use AI applications. Our work strengthens society's ability to innovate, improving both efficiency and individual digital sovereignty.

Relation to PICS and other research groups

The Trustworthy AI Initiative is situated at the PICS (Privacy, Information security, and CyberSecurity) collaboration platform. PICS has studied privacy and information security both from a technical perspective but also from a societal, ethical, and legal point of view.

While PICS is the home of the Trustworthy AI Initiative, it is collaborating with further research groups at the University of Skövde, such as the Skövde Artificial Intelligence lab and the Software Systems Research Group. The initiative will also reach out to the Digital Health Research Group and to researchers across all schools who apply and develop AI applications.

Methodological Approach: Z-Inspection®

The Trustworthy AI Initiative applies the open Z-Inspection process to assess the ethical and human rights aspects of embedding AI applications into organisations. We aim to leverage the expertise of around 30 similar labs worldwide, all applying and contributing to the Z-Inspection process for Trustworthy AI.

Z-Inspection® is the most comprehensive method so far. It has been applied in major projects in Europe and worldwide and is hosted at z-inspection.org.

The Z-Inspection initiative was founded by Professor Roberto Zicari.
